Well, for the second time in my life, i managed to break my left leg. This time from a far less dramatic cause - a bad ankle-twisting whilst stepping off of the back porch. A break to the lower part of my fibula was the result, and fortunately all i need to do is wear a removable brace for a few months. I am pretty much able to walk around normally.

For those of you who know me, you may recall the story of my first broken left leg. It was a snow-covered January day at the Farmingdale NY airport, and while waiting for the frost to melt of the wings of my airplane, I slipped on the ice and “twisted my ankle badly.” I was limping, but it didn’t hurt that much … so i hopped in my plane and flew home. Halfway thru the flight, i realized that it hurt like hell to depress the left rudder pedal. That’s when i realized it was broken. I managed to land the plane at my home airport - luckily the winds were calm and not much rudder was required to land safely.

I was in a cast for 3 months.

Six Principles for Making New Things:

Paul Graham:

Here it is: I like to find (a) simple solutions (b) to overlooked problems (c) that actually need to be solved, and (d) deliver them as informally as possible, (e) starting with a very crude version 1, then (f) iterating rapidly.

I stumbled on this article on makeuseof.com about five web services that offer you one degree of separation between web services and your personal identity. Very useful stuff. In summary:

  1. Mintemail - random email address.
  2. Numbr - random phone number to you can use to forward to your real one.
  3. BugMeNot - disposable username/password for annoying sites like nytimes.com that make you register to read (and see their adds =/ )
  4. FakeNameGenerator - Creates a totally random identity. Kinda amusing too.
  5. File.io - upload and share file/s (via password-protected URL) for 30 days. Once 30 day period is over, all shared files will be automatically deleted.

My friend Valerie brought this hilarious short film to my attention today. A sad but true commentary on the state of courtship in the age of the internet.

BOSTON, Feb. 12 (UPI) — Five modifiable factors can give a 70-year-old man a 54 percent probability of living to age 90, U.S. researchers found.

The study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, also found five factors that add up to an unhealthy lifestyle, which reduces that probability to 4 percent.

“Smoking, diabetes, obesity and hypertension significantly reduced the likelihood of a 90-year life span, while regular vigorous exercise substantially improved it,” the study authors said in a statement. “Furthermore, men with a life span of 90 or more years also had better physical function, mental well-being and self-perceived health in late life compared with men who died at a younger age. Adverse factors associated with reduced longevity — smoking, obesity and sedentary lifestyle — also were significantly associated with poorer functional status in elderly years.”

Dr. Laurel Yates of Brigham & Women’s Hospital in Boston and colleagues studied a group of 2,357 men — with an average age of 72 — who were participants in the Physician’s Health Study beginning in 1981 to 1984. Of these, 970 men lived to age 90 by the time the study ended in 2006.

The researchers found the probability of living to age 90 was reduced 44 percent by a sedentary lifestyle, 36 percent by high blood pressure, 26 percent by obesity and 22 percent by smoking. Having three factors together — such as sedentary lifestyle, obesity and diabetes — reduced the probability of living to age 90 to 14 percent.
