Apple, who doesn’t normally do demo versions, is giving up a 30-day version of the new Aperture, Apple’s pro-photographer-oriented version of iPhoto.

The last time i tried Aperture, it took so long to do anything on my Dual G5, that i stopped using it in frustration. Now that i have a new Intel desktop machine it may be alot different.

I stumbled on this article on makeuseof.com about five web services that offer you one degree of separation between web services and your personal identity. Very useful stuff. In summary:

  1. Mintemail - random email address.
  2. Numbr - random phone number to you can use to forward to your real one.
  3. BugMeNot - disposable username/password for annoying sites like nytimes.com that make you register to read (and see their adds =/ )
  4. FakeNameGenerator - Creates a totally random identity. Kinda amusing too.
  5. File.io - upload and share file/s (via password-protected URL) for 30 days. Once 30 day period is over, all shared files will be automatically deleted.

Prologue: ”

Speaking of Twitter, Prologue looks interesting: it’s a WordPress theme that serves as a standalone Twitter-like server for a small team. This sort of idea — more reliable and private — sounds perfect for distributed teams.

New Authentication Scheme Proposed: “jerel brings us a story about a prototype authentication system which approaches security from an atypical angle. It focuses on hiding identity challenges from attackers in addition to the responses. The system, Undercover [PDF], ‘uses a combination of visual and tactile signals in the authentication process.’ ‘The system displays a set of images to the user and asks if any belongs to the image portfolio that the user had previously selected. At the same time, the trackball sends the user a signal that maps each button on the case to a certain answer. The user’s hand must cover the trackball for it to operate, so a sneaky observer wouldn’t be able to see his or her selections, or answers. So a would-be attacker can’t ’see’ the tactile challenge presented by the trackball and therefore doesn’t get the user’s authentication data, even though he or she could see the image challenge on the display.’

Google Toolbox for Mac released: “Google Toolbox for Mac is a new open source project that joins the Google Data APIs Object-C Library as code available under the Apache license so you can use it in your own projects. Does it sound like I’m quoting a press release? Well, I am a bit. Google Toolbox for Mac is clearly for Mac geeks, but not my particular genre of Mac geek, so bear with me.
